Collage Portrait
My identity college is how I view myself. I based it off a photo taken by my father, and I decided on that photo because it shows my extreme love for nature and the outdoors. I used the color green to convey my love for the outdoors and travel. Green is also a color of happiness, and I'm generally a very happy person. You can often see me with a smile on my face, and hear my laugh from down the halls. I added some words to help push the narrative of my happiness and humor. I added the work funny to show I like a good joke and am often making others laugh as well. Some other symbols in my portrait are the word “March” and the number “11”. This is my birthday, and eleven is my lucky number. This portrait I created feels like me, I look at this and I can see my personality and just my features in general.
Human Anatomy of Technology
This speaker is portrayed as human-like. I tried to convey that this speaker has a mouth with many teeth, and I wanted it to be slightly disturbing. I blacked out the speakers eyes to give a see no evil vibe. I also think music is often a way to blind oneself from what is happening in the real world. I also added a bloody ear to show that music can be deafening, especially with a large speaker. I wanted to make most of the background and the speaker itself very colorful. I wanted that to contrast with the underlying dark theme involved. While creating this project I had a discussion with my grandmother about technology in her time. When I asked her about how different it is compared to when she was younger she had many stories and explanations. She told me “Never in a million years did I think phones would be on a tiny small screen.” She also told me about growing up and only hearing music on the radios. She said “I did not have headphones to hear this music until much later into my life, I only had the radio and my dad’s old record player.” My grandmother and many generations before her had not experienced the technology that we continue to see and experience today. This artwork I created reflects on how I see technology today and the good and the bad that comes with it.
The Value of Words
I created a set of hands holding onto each other, then I added words in and around them. I chose words that were meaningful and that I have heard spoken about me in my life. These words are positive and negative. Growing up I was bullied, and I wanted to create an artwork that showed my growth and strength now. I also added lyrics to different Adele songs. I decided to add these lyrics to explain that I still am not one hundred percent happy and I still struggle with my self esteem due to the bullying. I also added these lyrics to show that I am growing and I feel more like myself than I have ever felt before. This artwork means the world to me and I believe it shows my progression as a human.
Automatic Drawing
My drawing portrays three sets of eyes: two eyes are closed and one is open. My drawing is a representation of how I am feeling. The automatic drawing was a relaxing way to just let your mind melt and just draw shapes and lines with different shades and contrast. The pressure of not having any expectations can be intimidating. I found myself struggling to work without a simple idea in mind and what I wanted to do. When creating this I let go of the stress and anxiety that I am experiencing at the time. I was recently injured during a spirit and tore my UCL and I found that this was a way to let out my sadness and anger. I tried to gravitate towards lighter colors with black. I did this to express that I needed to relax and see the positive in my current situation. I enjoy how my art turned out. I believe that it is a good value of what I am feeling and this makes it very meaningful for me. To title my artwork I would probably call it “The Bright Side'' this is a representation of how there is always something positive that comes out of everything.
Still Life
While creating this still life that represented my life I decided to add some objects that best represented me. I added balloons to represent my whimsical personality and that usually I am a joyous person. The soda shows my sweet tooth and that I can always go for something sweet. Growing up I always enjoyed soda or even candy and that really helped shape my childhood and was a source of happiness for me growing up. I added a lemon to represent fruit. Although lemons are not everyone's favorite fruit, they are mine. I like the sourness of a lemon, and often eat one whole. I have been eating lemons since I was a child and I enjoy all fruit as well, but a lemon will always go with another fruit. Finally I added a fishbowl in there to represent my friends and I. We often will do our homework in the "fishbowl", or the door ways in the school. It represents our friendship and how close of a bond we have.
Art Awareness
While creating this art work I was influenced by different minority groups. I wanted to create an art that spoke to these groups and expressed that we are all equal. I believe that everyone no matter their race gender or sexual orientation is created equal. In my own life I have people that surround me that come from many different backgrounds. My aunt was adopted from south Korea, and she has faced hate through the COVID-19 pandemic. Some people may be offended by my art work. Some people that are very closed minded and have a hard time accepting groups of people may get offended, and I did this on purpose. I had a hard time creating different skin colors in this painting, and struggled to make it as diverse as I could possible.
